Random Things I Didn’t Know Till I Was A Mom

For a long while (like since Xander was born) I have had this errant thought that pops into my mind. It’s this: “Wow, that’s something I wouldn’t have EVER figured out unless I was a mom”

That thought is often coupled with a chuckle or a shake of my head…

So I am going to begin a post in my blog that I will try to keep adding to as the months pass, entitled: “Random Things I Didn’t Know Till I Was A Mom”.  The first thing (although not the most important) is something several people have asked me about recently so I will elaborate now.

Warts.

Xander had A LOT of them.  In fact, he had a wart on his knee, the top of his leg, 9 of his 10 fingers, and the palm of his hand.  We had been to the Dr. to have them froze off,  This was painful and DIDNT work. We went to Walmart and got the “freeze-it-off-yourself” stuff.  It didn’t work. We got a prescription medication that wasn’t covered by our insurance and cost WAY more than we should have ever agreed to pay.  It didn’t work either.  One time I caught Xander using the fingernail clippers to try to clip the warts off his fingers.  WOW! Warts bleed A LOT!  And then they just grow back.  We tried duct tape and the liquid wart remover, it removed the skin all around the wart (VERY VERY PAINFUL) but the wart lived on.

I was desperate for some help and Xander was getting very frustrated at the pain and embarrassment of all these warts. We took to wrapping all his fingers with band aids before school so the kids couldn’t see his fingers.  As a last ditch effort, I went online and looked up home remedies for wart removal. I was surprised by how many people had success with Apple Cider Vinegar. So we decided to try it, it was cheap and if it didn’t work I could always make pickles.

So we tried the warts on his fingers first. What we found was that after about 2 days of treating them it made them very sore. Although we could see it was KILLING the wart, Xander couldn’t keep the band aids on all day at school, and the Apple Cider Vinegar smelled strong. So we decided to go another route, We tried the wart on his leg.
I took a piece of cotton, soaked in in the ACV and laid it right on top of the wart, then I took a larger band aid, the tough strips brand, and sealed in the vinegar. This one on his leg was hidden by his jeans, and the smell was sealed in a little better, and because of how flat his leg was, it just worked better. The wart on his leg was a pretty good size too. After about 3 days of treating the wart on his leg, it turned black and a hole started forming in the middle of it. Xander said it hurt pretty good. Then the next night when we were doctoring it, Xander just put his nail under the edge of the wart and flicked it off. There was a sore spot for a while and I put Neosporin on it to heal it up, but the wart was gone. After we did the one on his leg , Xander was anxious to start on the one on his foot, we started the same process all over again, and on the 2nd day, when the one on his foot started to turn all black and yucky, so did all his fingers! The warts on his fingers were drying up too! I was amazed. We never did treat the warts on Xanders fingers. We kept working on the one on his foot and by the time it was healed up so were all 9 of his fingers. It did take a long time to get rid of all the warts, but it seemed like we were fighting a war with the virus and once we killed off the virus in his system, they started just healing up. I was amazed and so was Xander.

This was a year ago and Xander hasn’t had any trouble with warts since.  My next home remedy experiment is Raylee’s psoriasis.  I have several things I have read that I am going to try, (BEFORE I go to the expensive pharmacy!) See, I am learning…. 🙂
